Your living room doesn't need more light: it needs three lights
The three layers of lighting that change a living room most without building work, and how to combine them so it feels warm at night.

A single ceiling light, on or off. That’s how most homes are lit, and it’s why so many living rooms feel cold at night even when they’re beautiful by day. The problem is rarely the amount of light; it’s that all of it comes from the same place.
The three layers
- 1 · General light. The ceiling one. For cleaning, finding your keys or having people over. Useful, but it doesn’t create atmosphere: it lights everything equally and flattens textures and colours.
- 2 · Task light. Where you do something specific: reading in the armchair, cooking, working. A floor lamp by the sofa, a wall light over the reading table, under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen.
- 3 · Ambient light. The one that brings warmth: table lamps, indirect strips, a candle. Low, warm and at eye level. It’s what makes a room invite you to stay.
A well-lit living room has all three and doesn’t switch them all on at once: choose by time of day.
How to check it
At night, switch off the ceiling light and keep only task and ambient lighting. If the room goes dark or only one corner is lit, you’re missing a layer. If it feels cosy and you can read comfortably, you’re on the right track.
How we applied it in Casa Garpe
In our living-dining room we work with three lights instead of one: the pendant over the round table, ambient light for the sitting area and accent points. The room changes mood through the day without touching a single wall.
Details that make the difference
- Colour temperature. For a living room, warm bulbs around 2700 K. Cold white light belongs in a garage, not where you rest.
- Dimmable whenever you can. A dimmer turns one lamp into two different moods.
- At eye level. Table and floor lamps lower the light’s centre of gravity and make the space more intimate.
- Fabric or natural-fibre shades. Linen, paper or rattan filter the light and spread it softly, very much in the Mediterranean spirit.
- Pendants at the right height. Over a dining table, the lamp should light the table, not the eyes of whoever sits there.
No building work
None of the three layers needs building work. A floor lamp by the sofa and two table lamps change a living room more than any new piece of furniture.
